Christian Samhain?
Is it possible for Christian Witches to celebrate one of the greatest holidays of the year, Samhain or the Witches New Year without compromiseing our Christian beiefs? As surely as the moon wax then wane, is it possible to participate in the exciteing festivities of All Hallow's Eve. And here is why, Samhain is not the night of conquoring evil spirits, devil worship or sacrificeing animals or children. On the contrary, it is a time of year that we enjoy the bounty of our hard work and reap the blessing that our Great Creator has given us the past year and prepaering for the year to come. It is a time to end unsolved conflicts and prepare us for a brand new beginning. It is a time to remember those we love and has paved the road for us today, those who may have passed into the spirit realm, but still are with us to guide us, protect and watch over us. Our Mothers, Father's, Grandparents, and for some ,even our children and grandchildren. For some this means to take a stroll up to the attic and dust off the old spirit board to reconnect with loved ones past, for other's this may simply be lighting a candle in remeberance, for Christian Witches, this is only bound by your convictions. How you choose to celebrate is soley up to you. As with anything else in witchcraft and Christianity, it is not the holiday that is evil, but what is in our hearts. In Witchcraft, we give thanks to our Father in every holiday, we remember the blessings he has given us, and as every season of every year that he divinely created, we also celebrate these seasons in our lives, for each season has it's purpose to renew and help us grow in him.
Below are some Samhain idea's that is wonderful for even the most conservative Witch.
Ok, now for some good wholesome Samhain fun ... LET THE CELEBRATION BEGIN!!!
Since it is a New Year, now would be a wonderful time to create a new book of shadows or make one from scratch for a loved one.
About 7 years ago I was invited to a pumking carveing party. It was a wonderful experience as friends and family came together telling stories and carveing the most beautiful pumpkins. This is a great way to come together for the holiday.
Throw a "New Years Party", it is the New Year after all!!!
Turn your night of festivities into a 3 day festival. In older times it used to be a holiday celebrated for an entire week!!!. You can use the first night to build your alter or give thanks to God for the bounty we received during the harvest. Second night you could create a "Halloween Ball" with friends and family or maybe just for the kids, playing all the silly holloween songs under handmade shimmering moon's, ect. The third night, All Hallow's Eve could be dedicated to trick or treating or using this time to communicate with loved one who have past on, or any type of ritual or magickal work, or all of the above. Be creative and have fun!!!
Many churches now celebrate "Harvest Festivals" as an alternative to halloween. They usually provide alot of fun and games for the children.
Last year, the local senior community offered trick or treating in their residential homes. This was a wonderful experience since the children were able to trick or treat in a safe place that offered games and prizes as well, as well as bringing the celebration to the senoirs when otherwise they would not be able to celebrate. This is a great alternative to traditional trick or treating!!
I also got this off of an episode of Roseanne. Create a skit or musical that the family could be involved in about the "Ghosts Of Halloween Past"
We also have another tradition : we watch the movies "Casper" and "Hocus Pocus" while haveing a hands only buffet of finger foods, treats and drinks. Youcan add another touch by either getting recipes from a halloween recipe book , (they usually come out at the checkouts in grocery stores around the beginning of October) or makeing it a complete Harvest Buffet with your favorite breads, baked treats, whatever you choose. Add a little magic to the pot for success and prosperity to come for the new year.
For those who are not kin to divination or communicateing with the spirits, you can simply put up pictures of your love ones that have past on. Have each family memeber write a letter and have them read it out loud that night. Take a walk through memory lane with home video's and pictures.
This is also a great night to do some Angel Readings.
